ADVENTURE BOOK

Writer/Creative Director: Jak Charles
Illustrators: Mary Guo, Jesse Stewart
Client: G.J. Gardner Homes

Challenge: The building process for young families can be a chore.
Goal: Spark excitement for every member of a new family.
Solution:
Take families on a journey that teaches them how building a new home can be an adventure.

I was originally tasked with making a single colouring page for the G.J. sales team to hand out. This project soon took on a life of its own.

I pitched the idea that the building process should be an adventure for children as well as their parents. The idea was this book should join families on their journey, from the first show home to receiving the keys to their new G.J. home.

Character Creation

G.J.’s has a partnership with two other brands and wanted to have them incorporated into the book as well. Mary and I worked to turn each brands’ mascots into our team of brave adventurers. These characters would follow our young reader along their journey.

Art Direction

After finding and hiring our two illustrators, it was important to create a robust, feedback loop as they would both be working remotely. To reduce the back and forth, I worked up strong concepts for each page before handing them off. I created style boards, mock ups and explanations for each drawing.

Outcome

Not only was this book a success in New Zealand with hundreds of copies being handed out around the country, but seeing this response, G.J.’s Australian branch picked it up as well. We also built strong relationships with our artists, working together to create more artwork for foundations like Big Buddy.
